The Gateway to Humility

TRANSFER TO HUMILITY
Many had confidence in their natural abilities as youth — who, years later — had found that their abilities is a gift from God (Judges 15:16; 16:25-30). Over the years, God makes them aware that He uses their gifts to His purpose and glory. God hones our skills. He teaches us how to transfer self-confidence in our innate abilities to a humble trust in Him.

EXAMPLES OF HUMILITY
Peter was a boisterous complicated leader of men, but God changed this author’s leadership style to one that resembled Christ’s (I Peter 2:21-23). According to tradition, Peter would display great humility toward the end of his life (John 21:18-19).

Moses was a young eloquent and confident individual (Acts 7:22), but when he became old he was the meekest man who claimed to have speech problems. God used him mightily in that state!

David was a great warrior who overthrew other nations, and yet he humbly confessed his need for God by looking to the hills (Ps. 121:1-2).

Christ was born in humble surroundings and in a little obscure town. He thought it not robbery to be equal with God, yet He humbled himself even to the cruel death on a cross (Phil. 2:7-9)!

John the Baptist was a bold, yet righteous man who never took honor for himself, but always sincerely pointed others to Christ (John 3:30).

The apostle Paul, with all his knowledge of the law and powerful intellectual abilities, went from a persecutor of Christians to a slave for God. He stated his ability to humble himself and trust in the strength of Christ (Phil. 4:5, 12-13).

TIME AND HUMILITY
It’s a fact that time should teach us humility! It’s unfortunate that so many don’t learn the lesson that both God and time continually present to us.
The whole concept of humility is easy for followers of Christ to understand, but can be hard to put into practice: “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Mt. 23:12 – Berean Study Bible). What a great promise for those who go through the time-tested gateway of humility!

Short Inspiration from the Scriptures: Now God Knows!

“For now I know that thou fearest God…”
(Gen. 22:12. Read chapter 22)

In Genesis chapter 22, God tested Abraham by asking him to take his son Isaac to a mountain and offer him as a burnt offering. This test was tailored for Abraham to prove his love, loyalty, devotion, sacrifice, and commitment to his Lord! It’s likely that nothing else on earth was more precious to Abraham than the son God had promised him.

After hearing God’s voice, Abraham took his son and the wood to consume Isaac upon God’s altar!  We see the succession: Abraham journeyed three days to the mountain. And at the base of the mountain, he was prepared to climb with the wood, items for the fire, and the knife to slay his son. God (I’m speaking in human terms) watched to see this progression. This series of events still did not prove Abraham’s loyalty until the fatal wound would be carried out…directly into the body of his son. We see that ultimate sacrifice in vs. 10, when Abraham extended his hand and would have killed his son, but the voice from the angel of the Lord stopped him!

The child Isaac was saved. He remained God’s promised seed and through him, God would multiply and bless the earth! What a test of faith, to be set to kill your son, believing that God would raise him up from the dead (Heb. 11:19). Abraham passed his test and a nearby ram caught in the brush was sacrificed instead!

How is God Proving Us?

There are special times when God wants to test our integrity, loyalty, commitment, love, or devotion, as well. Sometimes He does it in the smallest ways until (speaking again in human terms) He knows what we will do. More importantly, God tests us to HELP US UNDERSTAND what WE will do! He may do this with progressive steps, as with Abraham. He takes us through these steps…each a bit harder than the prior one, until hopefully, we pass the test.

Director Dea. Gene Claxton and The International Christian Education Auxiliary staff (ICEA) shared a wonderful dinner with ETA students from Michigan who were not able to make the national convention in Phoenix, AZ. (Three of the students were not able to attend.)

Dea. Claxton led the ceremony at the restaurant, which included the graduation song, processional, brief speech, and students receiving their certificates.

One of the students commented: “this study and certificate means more to me than the PhD I received!”
