Start A Bible
Readers’ Club!

Continually devoting themselves to the
apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer
…. (Acts 2:42)

What to Do:

1.   Write out a simple sentence or two explaining each verse of the Bible you will be studying. (One chapter should be enough to study during a session.) Make copies and distribute.

2.   Have students sit at tables and each person at their table will take turns reading their sentence(s) and then read the associated verse(s) from the Bible. Continue this until all members have completed reading the chapter.

3. After the chapter has been read, the assigned group leader will “open the floor” and lead the group discussion by commenting on verses, asking questions, explaining scriptures, and encouraging feedback and comments from the group.

IDEA STARTER!

“Starting a Bible Readers’ Club is a good way of getting members involved in fellowship and studying the Word of God! Our club met once a month, on Sunday afternoons, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. This is not your traditional Bible class. The format is unique and refreshing. There were a number of people, including college students, who studied with us that rarely attended our Sunday morning classes!” Light refreshments were served.

Training Class for
Potential Teachers

Encourage one another and build
up one another…. (I Thes. 5:11)

What to Do:

  1. Start out by watching students to see who has potential to become a good teacher
    (I Tim. 5:21-22).
  2. Select your teachers (with your pastor or committee’s approval) and offer a once-a-week training class, held along with your regularly scheduled classes. Maybe during Sunday school.
  3. After weeks or months of training, assign your potential teachers times to teach among themselves (rotating weekly) (II Tim. 2:1-2).
  4. Create a report card and grade the new teachers on skills such as their ability to use scriptures, stay on the lesson, pace themselves, etc.
  5. Occasionally offer additional training for your new teachers in areas where they need help.

IDEA STARTER!

“Our church started a “Potential Teachers” Training Class. This class was offered once before with great success! About 10 students (who had potential to teach) were chosen and trained together in a class setting by the superintendent. After some time, the superintendent allowed students to begin teaching one another, rotating weekly. It became an active class and a number of the students (who became teachers) are now teaching their own adult classes.”

What to Do:

  1. Go online and search for “Children’s graduation caps”. (Some are as low as 3.99 each.) Be sure to order a sample cap prior to your ceremony, to determine the quality.
  2. Appoint someone from your membership, such as a school principal, to advise or help with the ceremony.
  3. Create simple invitations and have children invite parents and other family members (Mark 10:13-16).
  4. Ask a church volunteer, who is familiar with graphic design, to create children’s certificates from software templates.
  5. Call names and present certificates as you would during any graduation. Have cake and punch after the ceremony!

IDEA STARTER!

“Our Vacation Bible School administrators wanted to offer a graduation for the children who participated in our weekday VBS activities. The program was called “Teach The Children.” Some children made presentations and there were encouraging comments from teachers. One of the most exciting times of this event was to see the children in the background preparing, scurrying, and putting on their caps. They were so excited! This was “their graduation” and many proud parents showed up for the ceremony!”

A ‘Fruit’ful Teachers
Appreciation Program

If I am to live on in the flesh, this will
mean fruitful labor for me…. (Phil. 1:22)

plums-fruit-fruit-basket-blue-169579.jpeg

What to Do:

  1. Have members decorate small fruit baskets.
  2. During the program, call each teacher forward, one at a time. Present them with the “fruit of their labors” (Phil. 4:17).
  3. Type out inspiring ageless quotes about teachers on 3 x 5 cards. Place cards on tables and have some students reads them.
  4. Your program could include: student poems and testimonies about their teachers, reading of students’ thank you cards, an appropriate song, slide presentations guessing teachers’ baby pictures, and a MC reading brief info. about each teacher. (Create a teacher information form months before the program and give to teachers to fill out. During the program, read teachers’ favorite things and brief bio., such as how many siblings, favorite hobbies, little known facts, years in church, etc.)

IDEA STARTER!

“One year, our Christian Education Department held a program and honored all teachers and staff. The program was held instead of our regularly scheduled Sunday classes. Fruit baskets were given to all teachers and staff during the program. Breakfast was served to all in attendance. We acknowledged groups of teachers and staff, such as superintendents, former teachers, workers, etc. We also selected a keynote speaker who spoke about the value of teachers. This was a very rewarding event!”

Hold a Teachers
Empowerment
Conference

For you can all prophesy one by one, so that
all may learn and all may be exhorted. (I Cor. 14:31)

What to Do:

  1. Have a meeting with teachers and tell them that you propose to have a teachers only empowerment conference — using them as the presenters (Prov. 27:17).
  2. You could include some topics, such as: The Importance Of An Introduction, Storytelling, Teach With Heart, Knowing Your Student, What’s In A Question?, Teaching On A Child’s Level, The Discipline Of Study, Student Learning Styles, and others.
  3. Hold the conference on more than one day if you have many teachers.
  4. Choose the best teacher for a topic and give each one 15 minutes to make their presentation.

IDEA STARTER!

“Our church held a two-day teacher empowerment conference, entitled: “Commissioned to Teach”. All teachers had 15-minute assignments. A number of them had unique and powerful presentations. Each teacher was given a sub-topic related to their teaching ability. This was very helpful because even though everyone had the ability to teach, we were empowered by getting information about the teaching abilities and strengths of other teachers.”
