The Consolation

The apostle Paul’s salutation in II Cor. 2:2 reads: “Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” God’s grace is amazing! The word “grace” carries with it a number of meanings. It certainly is God’s unmerited favor. It is also His supernatural ability to come along side us and in times of weakness we can draw strength from the almighty! It seems a paradox — when we are weak then we are strong — the grace of God can be with us in that moment to give strength.  Paul spoke to those in Rome with authority, because of this grace that was given to him by God (Rom. 15:15). He wrote to the church in Corinth about how he labored more than any other minister. He also told them his ability to relentlessly labor was not anything he personally was capable of doing by his own strength (I Cor. 15:10). He made a comparison in the same verse, and used the words “Not I, but the grace of God was with me.”

So, the definition of grace we are focusing on in this article is mainly the ability that God gives us that goes beyond what ability or strength we may have. Grace was something the apostle Paul had experienced over and over again while reaching out past his own limitations, both physically and mentally. He talked about being stoned and left for dead, and being in perils of waters and with false brothers. He even confessed his fears (II Cor. 7:5). He was, what the Bible called, pressed beyond measure. In addition, he had the care of the churches in his heart and yet, was not able to see to their needs. Paul spoke about sorrow that was continual, but God supplied him with joy, as well! No one in ministry can carry the weighty sorrows that accompany ministry unless the grace and consoling power of God is right there helping to carry those burdens. The great apostle looked back on his experiences and wrote: “Thanks be to God, who always causes us to triumph in Christ.” We fail in our own efforts. Thank God, that like the apostle Paul, we have, over and over again, experienced the consolation that God gives! Many of us are well acquainted with our abilities and limitations, even our distresses. Yet, God is faithful, He doesn’t allow a test to consume our minds and overwhelm our hearts. We are not sufficient of ourselves, but God teaches us well that He alone causes us to triumph in Christ!

We see how Paul pulled back the curtains on the spiritual success of his life. He tells us in II Cor. 2:1-11 that God is the God of all comfort (vs. 3) and He comforts those who are involved in ministry for Jesus Christ (vs. 4). Paul’s success and the success of other ministers associated with him, was they had experienced God’s consoling grace in the face of extremely challenging times (vs. 4). That comfort they had experienced was the same comfort they were able to speak about to others who were suffering at the church in Corinth (vs. 4). He states that this is the comfort of God! This supernatural comfort is the grace of God he often wrote about at the beginning and ending of his letters — that grace needs to be extended, even multiplied to every believer. Grace is sufficient; consolation is sure. According to the apostle, as troubles increase and dangers surround us, so will God’s consolation increase and surround us (vs. 5)! These leaders were first partakers and examples of suffering and they wrote words in the good book to encourage us when we suffer. Jesus’ own words have carried many souls through their darkest times: “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.”

The remaining verses in Corinthians (vs. 6-11) give us great insight into facing challenging times. They speak of how times of tribulation are common to everybody and no one is exempt (vs. 6). The verse following assures us that those Christians who feel the real weight of suffering will not need to carry that heaviness alone (vs. 7). It is significant to note that Paul and these ministers speak to us today about being faced with death (vs. 8-10). They had become men who had no confidence in themselves to deliver themselves from pending death. We see a special grace, coupled with faith, when Paul made the statement that they have such confidence in God — while confronting death — that God was able to raise them from the dead (vs. 9-10)! Only God can meet with us and secure within us that type of faith! Finally, we find an obscure passage of scripture in the book of Psalms. It reads: “For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide Even to death.” (Ps. 48:14 – NKJV).

Be well!

What a Tree Supplies

apple-2720105_1920

As I look out a window from my home, I am suddenly paying particular attention to a tree that I have casually noticed before. I suppose with time on my hands, I am able to reflect a little deeper on things in nature, such as this massive structure that somehow extends into the expanse, unsupported by any visible means other than grass and dirt.

I am reminded of how God takes care of animal life, insects, and human beings from the sources of a tree. Here are some things that come to mind:

  • Trees supply oils, saps, and syrups
  • Temporary shelter for animals and man
  • The branches are homes for birds and lots of wildlife
  • The trunk is used for small animals’ habitations
  • Tree frogs and beetles live in the trees barks
  • Insects and animals feed from its bark
  • Many animals find safety from prey
  • Trees give nutrient to the soil
  • Animals, insects, and humans all enjoy the trees shade from the sun
  • The roots of trees are food for certain insects
  • Trees have carbon dioxide and create oxygen for us to breath
  • Materials are used from trees to build homes and shelter
  • Wood from trees are used for fuel and cooking
  • Many trees give us all kinds of fruit
  • Wood from trees create beautiful bon fires
  • Trees help with the environment by catching airborne particles
  • They reduce the concentration of gases in the air
  • Millions of wood products come from trees that help sustain and entertain us
  • Tree leaves are food used for insects
  • Trees help reduce noise
  • Provide jobs for workers who transform trees into products for consumers
  • Cool city streets
  • And other things not mentioned here

Trees are just one aspect that give life to God’s creation. This article may take you on a journey to think about how other things in nature supply man’s needs, such as air, water, the sun and moon, animals, plant life and grass, rain, vapors, seasons, early morning dew, mountains, valleys, winds, and more!

“You have done many things for us, O Lord our God;
there is no one like you! You have made many wonderful plans
for us. I could never speak of them all – their number is so great!”
Psalm 40:5 (GNT)

What a mighty God we serve!

No More Bystanders!

group-312408_1280

You have probably heard the one about there being three types of people in the world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened! For too long, many members of the body of Christ have not made things happen! They do spend much time wondering what is currently happening around them. The present times are demanding that we not stand by idle!

God is no longer asking and wooing us to change. This may not be socially correct, but it is necessary to state that God may even go as far as to severely punish some of His people for being bystanders in this moment! (It’s becoming more apparent to this writer that bystanders who are Christ’s will ultimately be judged for their lack of work and ministry!) According to the Bible, and in more ways than one, a person who knows to do good and doesn’t do it is committing sin (James 4:17).  God has intensified his request and, in many ways, demands that His people stand ready to do the “work of ministry”. What does “the work of ministry” look like? At the present time (and within our present governing guidelines), it is finding creative ways to be of service to others. It may mean taking on a monthly bill for someone who is in distress. It could mean cooking meals and possibly dropping off plates at an elderly person’s doorstep. Because of a shortage — those who can sew, may consider making masks for loved ones. Some are called to hold prayer meetings — others can send out daily encouraging texts. How about mailing thank you cards to those who have consistently labored in the ministry? God HAS called soldiers to be active, and many have missed the call to be in place — possibly because of their own preoccupation or selfishness. How tragic! Whatever gift or ability God has given you, ask Him how to find a creative way to be of service to others.

One last thing to consider. We cannot be bystanders in devotion to the Lord. Get a schedule of upcoming online and teleconference services and be an active participant with your church or churches that you are familiar with. Those in the body of Christ are NOT EXEMPT from “assembling themselves for service” with leaders and laborers they know. Be careful listening to and/or reading a steady diet of “religious” teaching and preaching! Even one such teaching ministry, so called, can lead a person from sound doctrine, or at least cause them to question the integrity of what they have been taught! There are many online who teach things you have not been taught. Here is a quote from the book of Acts: “For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.” (Sounds like modern day Facebook!) Nothing is new under the sun. We have been warned TWICE in Gal. 1:8-9: “If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” Some have already entertain thoughts about it and opened the door to it when they should have considered such teaching a curse! Don’t forget that we do need to be taught and have times of worship. Why not do these two things: stay connected and instructed with who and what you know, and ocassionally fill your home with good gospel music from http://www.youtube.com or your personal collection?

Stay safe!

Short Inspiration from the Scriptures: Ministers!

Ministers

(And the King shall answer and say unto them,
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have
done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren ye have done it unto me.)
– Matthew 25:40 –

There are deep longings and unanswered questions that settle in the hearts of masses of people. They look for ways out and would confide in anyone who is trustworthy and able to help them. In countless ways — ministers run to their rescue — they are in place and the world has been touched by these servants of God! The Lord has fashioned some ministers to help reach into the very core of hurting, yet seeking-people (Prov. 20:5; I Cor. 14:24-25). They have gone through experiences that qualify them to be used by God to minister on great levels, as well (II Timothy 2:20-21). Ministers minister in every way imaginable to lonely and despondent people. They are doing a great work for Christ by their shear masses. All across the globe, ministers for Christ have been strategically placed in areas of spiritual leadership, and yet, they have servant hearts (Matt. 25:34-40). Even with all the ministry that takes place, everywhere people are still waiting for these true representatives of Christ to come forth. In comparison, the harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few. Thousands are ready for spiritual awakening and ministers will lead that cause…for, how shall they hear without a preacher? People must be led into a loving relationship with Christ! Are you that minister? If so…God has given you the power to make a difference and change lives!

Let’s be about our Father’s business!
